Should you hire a UI/UX designer through an EOR, your own entity or as a contractor?

For most companies hiring their first few UI/UX designers in India, an Employer of Record is the fastest compliant route. Your own entity only wins on cost at scale, and contracting suits genuinely independent work only.

Usually best for 1-10 hires

Employer of Record

Hire without an Indian company. The EOR runs contracts, payroll, PF and gratuity. Published fees run about $99-$249 a month with India specialists and $459-$699 with global platforms.

Best at scale

Your own entity

Cheapest per head once the team is large enough to absorb fixed running costs. On Peorient’s model that is about 11 employees against a $199 fee, or 4 against a $599 fee.

Contractor

No statutory contributions, but a full-time, exclusive arrangement can be reclassified as employment, with back-dated liabilities.

What should you plan for when hiring a UI/UX designer in India?

UI/UX designers in India are usually hired on portfolio strength, and pay varies more with product-company experience than with years alone. Agency and product backgrounds can carry the same title at very different levels.

  • IP in design files: make sure the employment contract assigns design files, prototypes and brand assets to your company.
  • Tool licences: design and prototyping software is billed separately from the EOR fee.
  • Portfolio test: assess candidates on a realistic brief, because seniority titles vary a lot between agencies and product companies.
  • Notice periods: experienced professionals in India commonly serve 30 to 90 days’ notice. Agree the start date early and check whether a notice period buyout makes sense.

Which Indian cities cost more for a UI/UX designer?

Bengaluru and Mumbai carry the highest premiums; tier-2 cities can cut the salary line by around a sixth. All-in figures below are for the mid-level midpoint through an India-specialist EOR.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a UI/UX designer in India in 2026?

A mid-level UI/UX designer earns about ₹8 to ₹15 lakh a year. Through an India-specialist EOR the all-in cost is about $11.6k to $19.2k a year, or $16.4k to $24k through a global EOR platform. The total includes employer PF, gratuity, insurance and the EOR fee.

Do I need an Indian company to hire a UI/UX designer?

No. An Employer of Record employs the person through its own Indian entity, runs payroll, PF and gratuity, and invoices you each month while you direct the work. See how an Employer of Record works.

When is my own Indian entity cheaper than an EOR?

Usually only at scale. On Peorient’s planning model, a fully run entity starts to beat a $199 India-specialist fee at about 11 employees and a $599 global platform fee at about 4. Read EOR vs subsidiary in India.

Can I hire a UI/UX designer as a contractor instead?

You can engage a genuinely independent contractor, but someone who works full time for one company, on its schedule and tools, risks being treated as an employee, with back-dated PF and other liabilities. See employee vs contractor.

How long does it take to hire a UI/UX designer in India?

The paperwork through an EOR is usually the quick part. The bigger delay is the candidate’s notice period, commonly 30 to 90 days for experienced professionals, so plan the start date from the offer acceptance.

Every figure comes from the same model as Peorient’s Employer of Record cost guide, so you can reproduce it line by line.

  • Salary: annual gross pay from Peorient’s average salary in India by job role bands, with city premiums from the same research. If your offer quotes CTC including employer PF and gratuity, your total will be lower.
  • Statutory wages: modelled at 60% of gross pay, above the 50% floor set by the labour codes in force since 21 November 2025 (KPMG summary).
  • Employer PF: 12% plus 0.5% EDLI and 0.5% administration on PF wages, capped at the ₹25,000 wage ceiling notified on 17 September 2026 (Gazette S.O. 5109(E)), so at most ₹3,250 a month. See EPF and ESIC employer contributions.
  • ESIC and bonus: 3.25% ESIC and 8.33% statutory bonus apply only where wages are up to ₹21,000 a month.

  • Insurance: ₹1,000 a month for group health cover and benefits, editable in the calculator.
  • EOR fees: $199 a month for an India specialist and $599 for a global platform, the midpoints of published fees in Peorient’s Best EOR in India 2026 research (checked 30 September 2026). GST is excluded by default; ask each provider for its written GST position.
  • Exchange rate: ₹94.8 per US dollar, in line with the 22 October 2026 close of ₹94.82 (Deccan Herald).
  • Own entity: Peorient planning model of ₹18 lakh a year in fixed running costs, ₹6 lakh set-up spread over two years and ₹24,000 a year of extra administration per employee. These are modelling inputs, not incorporation quotes.
